Visiting the City of Naples

June 30th, 2010

italy bay of naples amalfi coast GoHoto

A holiday in Naples is very refreshing irrespective of the fact how you reach there, either by central train station or Capodichino Airport.

The history of Naples goes back to the 5th century BC when it was a Greek colony. Later settlers from the Cumae close by colony displaced the actual inhabitants leading to the foundation of new city ‘Neapolis’. Finally both the old and new city developed together and got absorbed in the Roman Empire. But the connection with Hellenistic culture was still there.

On your arrival in Naples, you will be spell bound by its magnificent architecture picturesque views of the Bay of Naples,  Mount Vesuvius and the islands. Along with natural beauty Naples also has some historic treasure like  Capodimonte one of the best museums in Italy.

The city of Capodimonte has work of various great masters like Titian, El Greco, Raphael, Caravaggio are few I can remember. The National Archaeological Museum is considered to consist of one of the most important antique collections in the world. Among them is the famous erotic painting and sculpture ‘gabinetto segreto’ which was locked away for most of the time since its discovery because of its pornographic appearance. The museum also houses a vast Farnese collection of classical sculpture and numerous riches from Pompeii.

BayOfNaplesVesuvius GoHoto

Naples also houses other distinguished museums like Museum of San Martino, Charterhouse and the Palazzo Reale are a perfect window to cherish the works of the world’s most renowned artists.

Apart from museums, the churches of Naples are also a marvel including the Santa Chiara, there is another small church of the Pio Monte della Misericord popular for its huge altarpiece by Caravaggio portraying the Seven Acts of Mercy. The main cathedral of Naples is dedicated to the patron saint, San Gennaro and is a famous tourist destination not only for its architecture but also for the great legend attached to it. The structure houses many significant works of art along with phial of saint’s blood which is brought out in May and September every year when it is said to liquefy. The Napolis believe that if the blood fails to liquefy, tragedy will occur in the city.

Enjoy the stunning views of the Bay of Naples in the district of Chiaia followed by evenings, when you can roam in the stylish streets to enjoy the local delicacies and other boutique shops like Fendi and Bulgari in remarkable 19th and early 20th century Palazzi. The district is also known for pedestrians,  houses famous coffee bars where it is a trend to relish a thick, sugary espresso before going on the evening stroll.

Chiaia is a ideal destination for shopaholics who enjoy visiting the 19th century glass vaulted domed shopping gallery called the Galleria Umberto I.

Naples is a delight for eyes and Napoli food is a delight for body and soul. Pizza, pasta or spaghetti in Napoli sauce, Eggplant Parmesan originated. Naples is known for its seafood too.

ischiaGoHoto

If you are here for New Year’s then you will enjoy best New Year’s Eve fireworks displays. Summer festivals are mostly music festivals, whole city becomes alive and In September there are two religious festivals held every year, the Festa di Piedigrotta and San Gennaro.

If you are looking for lively, vibrant holiday then wonderful Naples with its historical and artistic treasures, narrow, winding streets with small shops is best for you.

Naples, I will be back soon. Napoli che sarò di ritorno presto!!

Other must visit destination is Volterra located at 540 metres over the valley on a stony peninsula holding some of the best preserved Roman ruins of Tuscany. Followed by one of the most perfectly preserved villages of Italy. If you enjoy photography then walled villages and wineries are just perfect.

While enjoying your Travel Tuscany don’t leave the wine towns Montalcino and Montepulciano. Montalcino still looks fresh from 16th century. Montepulciano is the largest and highest hill town in the south of Tusc

A myriad of twisted alleys with blooming flowers in stone baskets and stone promenade on inside of the walls it looks beautiful, was perfect for the film Romeo and Juliet in 1968. Touring Roman Verona

June 25th, 2010

Ponte Pietra was built by Romans in Verona Verona reminds me of the most famous love story ever told – William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, thus making it a popular holiday destination for lovers and romantics. Shakespeare said, ‘There is no world outside these walls…’ and thats exactly what I felt when I entered the gates to the historic city of Verona. Few places match Verona in preserving their Roman relics as living parts of the city; Italy’s best preserved Roman arena is still in use for opera and pop concerts. Verona’s Roman sights, like those from the middle Ages and Renaissance, are part of this northern Italian city’s daily life, not roped-off museums of some long-forgotten time.

This city gave me an opportunity to watch shows in the first-century area, walk through Roman gates, and follow the grooves made in the paving stones by ancient chariot wheels.

It is widely believed that whenever any new construction requires digging, more relics of Verona’s Roman history emerge from under its streets. The foundations of a massive Roman gate, Porta Leoni, was unearthed under Via Leoni , and left exposed to show the stonework.

A diagram of the whole gate is on the wall above, and behind it is one complete arch of the original gate, which had been covered by the wall of a later building. Porta Leoni was an entrance through the original Roman walls that enclosed the core of the city.

However, not everything was covered. At the center of Piazza Erbe, the busy market square, a statue of a Roman goddess wCastelvecchio or Verona castle was built in the 14th century.as used as a stand in for the Virgin Mary, and is now known as La Madonna de Verona.

A few blocks away, where Corso Porta Borsari meets Via Diaz, the imposing multi-tiered Roman Porta dei Borsari spans the street, as it has since the first century AD. A third Roman arch overlooks the river on Corso Cavour. The Gavi Arch, a first-century Roman gate, stood elsewhere originally, but was disassembled and was reconstructed here in the 1930s. Under it are the original paving stones, complete with the grooves made by chariot wheels passing through the gate.

For me, the star of Verona’s Roman collection is the First-century Arena, far better preserved than Rome’s Coliseum. I also explored the giant   vaulted interior of this arena and climbed to the top for the full impact of its grandeur. This arena is believed to have been a part of the city’s history for 2000 years, first as a stage for gladiator combat, later providing shelter from barbarian invasions and as the venue for one of Europe’s most famous summer opera festivals, the Stagione Lyrico di Verona.

Porta dei Borsari was first built by the Romans. As I set sail across Ponte Pietra, I discovered a stone bridge which was first built by the Romans, but destroyed by the retreating German army in 1945. The bridge’s two arches on the far side of the river are all that’s left of the original Roman construction; however, it has been rebuilt exactly as it was, from the stones the Veronese had carefully salvaged from the river in 1945.

Overlooking this magnificent bridge is the Teatro Romano, where the Romans were the spectators to some striking performances. Its stone seats were built into the natural curve of the hillside, but in the intervening centuries the hillside was built over with shops and homes. However, by 1830, when this situate was bought over by a Veronese merchant, there were no traces left of this magnificent amphitheatre. Now in use again, it is the venue of a summer Shakespeare festival, ballet and jazz concerts, which I personally feel is an absolute treat to watch.

I also explored the smaller Roman treasures of Verona like statues; reliefs, columns, mosaics, bronzes; pottery and glass that have been unearthed are displayed in a former monastery above Teatro Romano, at the small Museo Archaeologico. Verona is one of the most picturesque destinations in the Italy.

These Stones retrieved from ruins and excavations of Roman Verona and displayed at the Museo Lapidario Maffeiano opposite the Arena on Piazza Bra give just a clue of what the city must have looked like 2000 years ago.

Visiting this magnificent city of Verona was like travelling into the past and reliving all the glorious moments that made this city what it is today.
