Lord Krishna City

Dwarka, the very first capital city of Lord Krishna’s empire, is premier holy place for Hindu Pilgrimage. Dwarka is situated at west coast of Gujarat. Lord Krishna is supposed to be the first emperor of this place.

Dwarka is the godliest place in the state of Gujarat. Once you get entered the pious city, you will sure get the feeling of being blessed by God. Dwarka gives place to manifold chapters of the history relevant to Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva and top of the most Lord Krishna. Dwarka was initially named as Kushasthali or Dwaravati. The myth to this place is related with the Lord Krishna. After slaughtering Kansa, Lord Krishna left Mathura and came to a place that he named it as Swarnadwarika. Lord Krishna’s great grandson Vajranabh constructed the temple Dwarkanath in just only one night.

Lord Vishnu had skid Shankhasura, the fiend in this holy place. Lord Shiva’s one Jyotirling among the 12, is situated here and is named as Nageshwar Mahadev. The city gives place to lots of god and goddess here. The famous temple of Rukmini, beautiful wife of Krishna, also gives a great attraction to the tourists came there. The other spot to see there is the Sharad Peetha, set up by Jagatguru Shankaracharya.

Lord Krishna first capital cityThe city Dwarka is full of temples that work as main tourist attraction places also. The core among these temples is Dwarkadheesh Temple. This temple is tugged on the northern bank of Gomti Creek. The temple is one of the most popular among Hindu Pilgrimage. The architecture of the temple is so gorgeous that nobody can control himself for praising its beauty. The temple speaks clearly about the culture and traditions of 2500 years back. The temple does not look the rich and poor people from a different eye. It gives entrance to all equally. The religious environment in the temple is just created by few norms followed since the construction of the temple. Like, nobody can enter the Jagat Mandir just wearing shoes, leather belts, keeping their heads bare, and many more.

Rukmani Devi Temple also adds great importance to the city. Although the temple is very small but holds great past history in it. The story behind the origin of this temple sounds very interesting. Once upon a time, Durvasa Muni, known for his short tempered nature, was invited by Lord Krishna and his wife Rukmani for dinner. As per general etiquette, it’s not expected to eat or drink by host till the guest doesn’t get satisfied. But in between the dinner only, Rukmani felt thirsty and he told Krishna to get her water. Krishna stepped his foot while Durvasa Mini was not seeing and water came out from the earth. She started drinking water without prior permission from Muni. This angered him. He cursed her to live apart from Lord Krishna. The effect of that curse can be seen even today as her temple outside the city and Lord Krishna’s temple in the city.

The other most prestigious temples in Dwarka are The Samudra Narayan Temple, The Gomtiji temple, Nageswara Mahadev Temple, Bhalka Tirth, etc. Best time to visit Dwarka is at the time of Janamasthmi, the day when the Lord Krishna gets born. It is the main festival of Dwarka celebrated with full bliss and joy.

Sacred Jain Pilgrimage

Dilwara Jain Temple is one of the most sacred pilgrimages for Jains. Situated about 2.5 km from the hill station of Mt. Abu in Rajasthan, the Dilwara Temples are renowned for their elegant marble beauty and exquisite work. I was told by the locals that architectural work and carvings are comparable to the one in Taj Mahal. So I started my hike up the hills to view this marvel with my own eyes. Built between 11th and 13th century AD, these temples have been a major attraction for their intricate marble carvings and architectural excellence. The surrounded mango trees and lush green hills add to the beauty of this marble wonder and offer a magnificent sight to the entire temple complex.

Assisi: The Mystic Town of St. Francis

July 23rd, 2010

Mystic town of St. Francis

The Prayer of St. Assisi or St. Francis

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;

where there is hatred, let me sow love;

where there is injury, pardon:

where there is doubt, faith ;

where there is despair, hope

where there is darkness, light

where there is sadness, joy

O divine Master,

grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;

to be understood, as to understand;

to be loved, as to love;

for it is in giving that we receive,

it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,

and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.

Amen.

Assisi is a small town in the rolling hills of Umbria in Italy more popular known as birth place of St. Francis. St Francis is one of the most popular catholic saints in the history and Assisi is the most important pilgrimage site in Europe. Assisi is busy all year with pilgrims and tourists, most of whom take a day trip from Rome to Assisi. Assisi has seven other churches besides Basillica id Francesco worth visiting for their history, beauty and their connection with St. Francis. Basillica di Francesco is one of the oldest monuments of Italy. It was built in the 13th century. The interior Gothic architecture styleof the church is an example of early style of Gothic architecture. This was a great step in the development of Italian art.

Basilica di San Francesco contains relics of St. Francis and few art works. Basilica also houses a collection of famous art including Giotto’s grand frescos of the life of St. Francis. I went to Assisi from Rome by car which is only about 90 miles away in the north. The peace and serenity of this beautiful town welcomed me after the hustle bustle of the capital Rome. I explored the narrow streets full of flower ornamented balconies and the town is even more charming in the evenings with its medieval aura.

Assisi is very popular among people who love food with its renowned mouth watering black truffles St. Francis is buried in Umbriaand a glass of chilled delicious dry white wine called Orvieto. One must try the antipasti plate of prosciutto, salami, liver, suckling pig and the best olive oil of Italy. Being a gourmet, I took the pleasure to try and enjoy all these delicacies here.

I was awestruck to see the magnificence and decoration of the Basilica church which illustrates the great love people had St. Francis who was a man of simple tastes. The holy tomb of St. Francis in the crypt is a sacred position where devotees come from everywhere to pray.

Apart from the Basilica, there is Rocca Maggiore which is an old imposing fortress rebuilt in the 14th century.  Tourists must also visit the Basilica di Santa Chiara (devoted to Francis’ first sister Saint Clare), the Romanesque San Peitro (Saint Peter), Santo Stefano (Saint Stephen) and San Rufino which is the town cathedral of Assisi.

I walked up Corso Mazzini to Piazza del Comune and took pleasure in the medieval palazzi and the marvellously preserveAssisi Mystic townd Temple of Minerva. It is the best place to sit and relax on the stone steps with a gelato watching the colourful and lively tourists. I went up on the slopes of Mount Subasio to take in the splendid view of the entire town with the greenery of the mountain against the shimmering soft pink of its medieval buildings. Assisi is the most visited Christian shrines today. I personally feel that Assisi is a place with a distinct feeling. It has serene energy with presence of awakening and stimulating peace in the human heart. I found it to be a more of empowerment place than a power place.

Ranakpur Jain Temple

July 21st, 2010

Important Jain Pilgrimage

Ranakpur Jain Temple in Rajasthan is renowned as one of the five most important Jain pilgrimages.. Surrounded by breathtaking Aravali hill ranges at the banks of Magai River, this Jain Temple is known for its exceptionally beautiful carvings and exquisite craftsmanship. Located at a distance of about 60 km from Udaipur, Ranakpur Jain Temple is a great sacred destination to visit. It took us 1 hour to reach by car as we drove enjoying scenery on our way.

The Jain Temples of Ranakpur were constructed in the reign of Mewar King Rana Kumbha in the 15th century who donated this vast land to Dhanna Shah for building his dream temple the Jain Temples of Ranakpur. It took 64 years to complete Jain Temple. Visitors are allowed entry at midday, till then we drove around and visited few other small temples in Ranakpur.

The entire temple complex is made of marble with intricate carving. The main temple is called the ‘Chamukha Temple’ or the four faced temple. It was built in 1439 and is dedicated to the first Jain Tirthankara, Adinath Ji. It has a basement of 48,000 sq feet and enclosed in it are four subsidiary shrines, 24 pillared halls and 80 domes which are supported by nearly 400 columns. There are about 1,444 carved marble columns in the entire complex which are the most distinctive feature I noticed while visiting the temple. Each column is aesthetically carved in different patterns. With their amazing designs and carvings, these columns also change their colors from golden to pale blue during daytime.

Jain Temple is known for its carved Marble pillars

There are four separate entrances to the chambers inside the temple. This chambers further lead to the main prayer hall where the magnificent image of Adinath is housed. Besides, the hall also houses the images of Parsvanath, Ajitnath and Mahavir Swami. The ceilings of the hall are intricately carved with the images of several nymphs in distinctive dance postures. The temple ceilings are adorned with foliate scrollwork and geometric designs. The Chamukha Temple is shaped as a Nalinigulm Vimana or heavenly aircraft which offers it a celestial appearance.

Apart from it, another fascinating attraction is the Temple of Pasarvanath. Also known as Patriyon ka Mandir, it was built in the middle of the 15th century and is renowned for its engraved windows embellished with Jain figurines. In its close proximity are the temples of Neminath and Surya God. The later features an attractive idol of Sun God in his chariot being drawn by the seven horses. Besides, the Temple of Amba Mata is also worth seeing inside the Jain Temple premises.

In nutshell, the Jain Temples at Ranakpur are acclaimed world side for their undulating carvings and marvelous architecture. Being the largest temples of Jain cult, these temples are undoubtedly a master piece of Jain’s rich culture and craftsmanship. A delightful experience!!
