Phuket: Pearl of Southeast Asia

August 31st, 2010

Phuket, a tourist destination is the largest island in Thailand running 34 miles north to south and 16 miles east to west. It is a treasure for holiday lovers. Every year, Phuket is enthralled with honeymooners, families or just youngsters to enjoy sun, sand and water along with Thai food.

We went to Phuket in Christmas holidays to escape the cold weather. We fell in love with the island as soon as we reached it. The best thing about Phuket is that there is always something to help you relax and unwind. We started with the religious sites of Phuket visiting the famous Wat Chalong temple. The temple is adorned with numerous pagodas and countless reflections from hundreds of small glass pieces. The temple has a rich history making it the most famous temple on the island. Phuket being a hilly island offers splendid views of the ocean along with sunrise and sunset. Some of the popular viewpoints are Promthep Cape, Kata Viewpoint and Khao Khat. There are also some amazing waterfalls in Phuket to relax or enjoy a dip.

For entertainment, Phuket is known for its shows. Fantasea is one of the most spectacular one, winning awards almost every year for the bestPopular entertainment spot in Phukettourist attraction in Thailand. The show is a blend of traditional Thai entertainment with modern effects. Other popular shows are Simon Cabaret and the Phuket Stunt Show. Other exciting places to see are the Bangla Road with its ladyboys and striking girls and the old Phuket town comprising of funky shops with a mixture of colonial and Chinese architecture.

Phuket beach offers great a playground for water sports. I enjoyed para sailing, snorkelling, scuba diving and fishing. There are many other water sports also like kayaking, yachting, and surfing and banana boats.

Phuket offers great restaurants serving all cuisines like Indian, Thai, Chinese, American, French, and Spanish etc. You must try the local seafood and island’s famous drink Phuket Beer. We hired beach bungalows in Phuket for our stay with all modern facilities. Holiday in Phuket for a relaxing break to rejuvenate.

August 30th, 2010

Second Largest canyon in the world.

The Spectacular Fish River Canyon is reputed as the second largest canyon in the south of Namibia. It is ranked as the largest canyon in Africa and second largest canyon in the world. Extended in a vast area of 650 km, the Fish River is the longest river in Namibia, the canyon formed offers an impressive treat to the visitors.

The magnificent Fish River Canyon was formed about 500 million years ago and is 100 miles long and 11 miles broad. The starting point of the canyon is near Seeheim and ends at Ais-Ais. An enormous gorge runs between the fissured Koubis to Ais-Ais along a distance of about 160 km. The canyon was formed due to the deposition of sandstone, shale and lava which is compressed and heated at a temperature of 600 degree C or more. The metamorphosed changed its appearance after re-crystallization. The dolerite lava got cut in black lines and erosion took place. However, the gorge was formed not only as a result of water erosion but also created when the valley bottom collapsed because of the movements in earth’s crust.

The Fish River Canyon is a popular hiking destination, though there are venomous snakes all around it. The best time to enjoy hiking is from May to August when the climate is dry and cool. The hike journey is 86 km lengthy and takes about 5 days to complete it. This arduous and exciting hike ends at Ais-Ais hot springs where the water temperature is nearby 60 degree C. These sulphurous springs are known for curing various health disorders.

Apart from offering excellent hiking trail, the Fish River Canyon is also the habitat of various animals such as Klipspringer, Chacma Baboons, Hiker's paradise Fish River Canyon little Dassies, Kudus, Mountain Zebras and Leopards etc. A diverse variety of bird species like Herons, Hammer kops, Plovers, Wagtails, Falcons and Egyptian Geese can also be seen inhabiting the lower reaches of canyon. The incredible and over whelming natural sights are so irresistible that you will love to catch all the natural bounties of canyon in your camera. The Canyon Nature Park and Gondwana Canyon Park provide scenic hikes and excellent accommodation options for the visitors.

The canyon forms an important part of Nature Conservation Park which opens at Hobas campsite. It is extended further 10 km to its major view point that gives breathtaking sights of Hell’s Bend. Besides, the canyon also offers stunning views of desert sunsets when the cliffs get washed with a band of amazing colors and look exceptionally beautiful and charming.

In nutshell, the Fish River Canyon in Namibia is a magnificent kaleidoscope of dazzling colors of pinks, greys and purples that should not be missed at any cost during your tour to Africa.

Bangkok : The City of Angels

August 28th, 2010

‘City of Angels’

Bangkok the capital city of Thailand, is also called ‘City of Angels’ in Thai.  I visited this mesmerizing city in summer and was enthralled by its beauty and various interest activities.

Bangkok has a variety of cultural and historic attractions,  some of which I happened to visit. One of the most extraordinary is the Grand Palace with soaring pagodas and dazzling golden rooftops. The palace was home to the Royal family of Thailand for 150 years and is currently used for ceremonial purposes. I visited Wat Phra Kaew, the striking guardian statues in addition to the magnificent Emerald Buddha statue. This site is also considered as one of Bangkok’s famous temples. If you plan to visit it dress conservatively.

The other historic sights to visit are the Ancient Cloth Museum displaying the collection of royal cloth, Bang Kwang Prison where you can visit by taking your passport along, Jim Thompson’s House famous for its bona fide Thai architecture, the glorious Saranrom Royal Garden and the Exhibition Centre to see the Thai culture and many more.

For entertainment, there are theatres and concert halls featuring shows with special effects. The trip to Bangkok is incomplete without indulgingBangkok's famous Buddhist Temples in the pleasure of Thai spa and massages. I had a relaxing Thai massage with most natural products used for rejuvenation.

Bangkok is a paradise for shopaholics who enjoy shopping from the massive shopping malls to the road side shops. There is an Amulet Market selling amulets of Buddha images often worn by Thai to protect them from evil spirits or bad fortune. I went to the Baan Silom which is an open air majestic style shopping centre famous for Thai designed jewellery and other Thai art. You can even bargain in some of the markets here like the popular Chatuchak Weekend market known to sell everything from vintage fans to snakes! There are also some of the most chic shopping malls of Asia in Bangkok attracting aristocrats, urban princess and other people from the royal family. Some of them are Emporium Shopping Centre, Fly Now, Chitlada Shop and Emporium.

Relaxing beaches of ThailandThe city offers excellent restaurants, cafes and eating joints serving different cuisines like famous Thai seafood, Thai dishes, Chinese, American, Italian, Spanish, Swiss, French, Indian, etc. Or you must try the authentic Thai food prepared with the exotic food ingredients in Chinatown, Siam Square, Phahurat Street etc.

Raksha Bandhan- celebration of brotherhood

August 20th, 2010

A celebration of brotherhood

Raksha Bandhan is one of the most popular festivals of India which is dedicated to the unconditional love and affection between brothers and sisters. It is celebrated on the full moon of the month of Shravaan or August. Raksha Bandhan means ‘bond of protection’ which denotes the feeling of love, affection and care to be shared between a brother and a sister.

On the auspicious day of Rakhi or Raksha Bandhan, sister decorates a tray called pooja-thali with roli, chawal, diya, sweets and colorful rakhis. She prays for her brother’s long life filled with abundance and prosperity. As per tradition sister puts tilak and chawal on their brother’s forehead and prays for his success and well-being. Then, she ties the colorful thread or Rakhi on his wrist as a mark of her love and sentiments towards her brother. In turn, the brother promises her to care for lifetime and facilitate his loving sister with exclusive Rakhi gifts. Thus, the affectionate festivity of Raksha Bandhan tightens the bond of love and affection between siblings.

The origin of Raksha Bandhan is traced back to the Indian Mythology period and various legends are associated with the origin and significance of this great day. According to Hindu Mythology, the festival of Raksha Bandhan is related to the legend of Lord Yama and Yamuna. Yamuna was Yama’s sister and she tied rakhi to her brother to wish him immortality. Yam was highly influenced by the serenity of Rakhi and declared that every brother who gets a rakhi tied by his loving sister will become immortal. This great occasion is also mentioned in Mahabharta when Draupadi tied rakhi to Lord Krishna to protect her and her family from the dangers of the war.

Since ages, Rakhi has been celebrated across the country with great zeal and enthusiasm. The customs and traditions may differ in different regions but all the rituals are followed with same gaiety and emotions among the siblings. In our family, the preparations for Rakhi get started about a month before. The markets are flooded with several fancy and colorful rakhis. Especially the girls look quite excited and to buy new clothes and the best of the rakhis for their dear brother. On the other hand, boys also begin to search for a surprising gift for their sister. On the auspicious day of Rakhi, everyone gets up early, wear new clothes and offer prayers to their deities. The sister prepares puja thali for arti of herEveryone remembers one religion humanity on Rakhi brother. Afterwards, she ties the sacred thread or rakhi alongwith chanting of holy mantras and in return she gets gift from her brother.

After performing all the rituals, the whole family gathers together and the celebrations get started. All the family members enjoy delicious food, sweets, gifts, music and dance. The great festival of Raksha Bandhan is a perfect time of reunion and to express your love and feelings with your siblings and to cherish the memorable days which all of us have spent together. Raksha Bandhan is the occasion to nurture your love and affection and to strengthen the bond between brothers and sisters. Just like other festivals Raksha bandhan brings people from different communities together.
