Uttaranchal
With 93% of its area covered with Himalayan peaks and glaciers and 6% with thick forests, Uttaranchal offer many adventurous activities to its visitors.
From trekking, to skiing, rock climbing, mountaineering, river rafting and paragliding Uttaranchal has several adventures.
The popular treks in the state are-Panch Kedar, Gangotri-Gaumukh Glacier, Khatling Glacier, Har-Ki-Doon, Nanda Devi and Valley of Flowers. There are various tour operators and packages one can hire.
There are several good areas for skiing in Uttaranchal like Mundali, Dayara, Alui and Bugyal.
The most recommended activity to engage in is river rafting as it allows you to explore the stunning landscape of the place.
The state has excellent camping sites in Dehradun, Mussoorie and Dhanaulti. During camping there are facilities for mountain biking, rock climbing, treks and jeep safaris.
Located between Nepal and Tibet, Pithoragarh region of Uttaranchal is famous for paragliding. The place is surrounded by four hills and paragliding among these shows dazzling of the region. Other activities you can indulge in Pithoragarh are hang gliding, fishing, canoeing, river rafting and trekking.
Dehradun has an aero sports club, which trains beginners in parasailing and paragliding and offers equipments for both these activities.
The state of Himachal Pradesh is located in the western Himalayas and is covered in lush forests, gurgling rivers, alpine meadows, snow covered mountains and vibrant open valleys making it an ideal place for adventurous activity of all kinds.
The districts of Kinnaur and Lahaul Spiti have great camping sites and facilities. Other camping areas are Dalhousie, Kullu-Manali, Dharamshala and Mashobra. Tents and other camping gear are available but you can carry your own. Fishing, hiking, river rafting and nature tours are conducted for the visitors.
In and around Manali rock climbing and mountaineering are conducted in the Beas Kund region, Dhauladar and Chandrabhaga Ranges and Pir Panjal. At Manali there is an allied sports institute that has a branch in Dharamshala and these conduct mountaineering tours.
Motorcycle, car and jeep safaris are a thrilling way to explore the Himalayan range. From Manali to Rohtang pass, the spectacular Spiti and the arid Lahaul, is one of the highest highways of the world, which can be covered by jeep.
The aeas, like Kangra Bilaspur, Hamirpur and Una can be explored through mountain biking and camping tours.
Shimla has an ice-skating rink which has naturally frozen ice.
Golfing and angling facilities too are available.
Area wise Rajasthan is India’s largest state with its capital being Jaipur. The Aravali Range and Thar Desert run through the state and offer great adventure opportunities to its visitors.
The camel safari is one of the most thrilling things to do in the deserts of Rajasthan. You can choose between camel carts or camel back for your journey into the Rajasthan hinterlands. Jodhpur, Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Pushkar all conduct camel safaris. Supplies for the way are carried in camel carts.
You can opt for lavish elephant safari as well.
Around the Shekhavati region and Udaipur, the terrain is rugged but the landscape is stunning. This can be explored by jeep safaris.
Indulge in the game of the royalty of Rajasthan- polo. You would need to send a request to the concerned authorities for a chance to play.
Camel polo also is popular in Rajasthan.
Parasailing, paragliding, trekking and camping are other adventures you can participate in. The camp locations are decorated with tents made of block printed fabric and are specially designed having a leisure area, bedroom and a small hallway lending an aura of royalty.
Desert rallies and vintage car rallies of Rajasthan are extremely popular events countrywide.
Located in the Himalayas, Jammu and Kashmir comprises three regions, Ladakh, Kashmir Valley and Jammu.
High snow filled mountains, spectacular flower filled valleys, rippling rivers and forested hills make Jammu and Kashmir a haven for adventure activities.
Paragliding, parasailing and hot air ballooning are some of the aero sport activities you can enjoy in Jammu.
Having some of the fastest rivers in the world makes the state an ideal site for river rafting. The glacier fed rivers are also fast becoming famous for angling.
The Indus, Sindh, Dal Lake, Suru, Chenab, Drass and Lidder are fast becoming renowned internationally as great spots for canoeing and kayaking. On the Jhelum and Dal Lake house boats and shikaras provide good opportunity to enjoy the dazzling landscape.
The Himalayan peaks offer some of the best trekking opportunities in the world. Some of the best trails include –Gulmarg trail, Tejjan to Samaidan trail, Ferozpur Nala to Danwas and Gulmarg to Tosamaidan. Treking gear and camping facilities are provided by most tour operators.
The state is the ski club of the country and its spectacular slopes provide exciting skiing adventures.
Other adventures include golfing and mountain climbing.
Ladakh-Leh
Located between the Kunlun Range and the Great Himalayas, Ladakh is one of the three regions of Jammu and Kashmir. Oce the capital of Ladakh, leh is now a district of Jammu and Kashmir.
Ladakh also known as ‘the land of passes’ and ‘Little Tibet’ along with its town of Leh offers adventure lovers many thrilling activities. Leh offers many trekking, mountain climbing and paragliding opportunities at peaks like Goleb, Stok, Zanskar and Kangyatse. In the Indus River in Leh indulge in white water rafting anf in the Nubra Valley join camel safaris.
In the Nubra Valley lies the world’s highest motorable road, the Khardung La Take permission from the District Magistrate’s office for access to this road and then discover such animals there as the hairy yak, horses and double-humped camels.
The Zanskar Valley in Ladakh are ideal for camping, trekking and hiking. There are hundreds of trails in the valleys, through forests, around lakes and mountains where one can trek, camp or hike. Hire tour operators as these activities need to be done under expert guidance. Camping and hiking gear is provided for by these operators. An interesting way to stay would be the cottages of the villagers so that you can get a taste of the local culture and cuisine.
